The Rockfish Team
Jim has been involved in camp and retreat ministries for over 30 years as a director, leader, visionary, planner, supporter, and participant. He's a preacher, teacher, writer, disciple maker, carpenter, backpacker, husband, father, and grandfather with decades of conference-level events, as well as local and international mission leadership under his belt. He has a powerful love for the Wesleyan tradition and what can be accomplished in camp and retreat ministry for the Kingdom of God through the Holy Spirit and willing hearts.
Jim and his wife Terri look forward to working with the fantastic staff and leadership of Rockfish as we move forward into an exciting era of ministry, outreach, and growth.
Director of Programming
Katherine joined our team in May 2016 after graduating from Appalachian State University. She brings with her a love for serving others and a passion for outdoor recreation. Katherine has worked in many leadership and athletic departments, and she is excited to be using the gifts God has given her here at Rockfish.
When Katherine is not in the office, you can usually find her renovating her house, riding horses, or adventuring in the mountains of western North Carolina. As a native nutmeger from Connecticut, Katherine's favorite season is fall, and you will never see her without her coffee.
Director of Outdoor Programs
Nick was born in Buffalo, NY, but grew up in Kentucky. At a young age Nick showed interest in the outdoors he spent summers with his grandmother in Buffalo hiking, swimming, and doing all things outdoors. What really put him on the path of outdoor education was a trip to Robert Treman State Park. He saw people in green suits that asked if they could play with him in the creek, and he was quick to ask "You can get paid to play in the creek?" from that moment on he knew he wanted to be a naturalist.
He graduated from Hocking College in a degree in Natural in Historical Interpretation and Unity College in Maine in a degree in Parks and Recreation and Eco-tourism. Nick loves to do anything outdoors to include primitive skills, hiking, fishing, and golfing. He moved from Chicago where he worked as the Outdoor Environmental Education Program Specialist for Chicago Parks District to the Fayetteville area due to his wife's relocation, and has found a home at Rockfish Camp and Retreat Center.
Retreats and Campus Use Coordinator
Jessie began working at Rockfish during the summer of 2011 as a college student and continued working summers through 2013. In August 2017, Jessie joined the Rockfish team full-time. With a background in both theatre and education, Jessie has a passion for serving others and creating memorable experiences. She is excited to use her gifts to guide guests to an amazing experience during their stay at Rockfish.
In her time away from camp, Jessie enjoys spending time with her husband, Joel, and their three dogs, Jax, Lexi, and Guinness. She also enjoys singing in her church's praise band, cooking, acting, and any activity that takes her outdoors.
Cynthia joined the Rockfish team in April of 2019 as an After School Counselor and has grown in her role and is now in charge of coordinating the marketing of Rockfish Camp and Retreat Center. She is a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University's Graphic Design and Media Arts program. Cynthia was born in Alaska and has traveled the world most of her life she has visited Germany, Holland, Japan, Malaysia, Bahrain, Dubai, and Taiwan to name a few places. She grew up for the most part in Hoke County North Carolina and joined the Navy in 2007 to 2012. She attended Camp Rockfish as a child in the mid 1990's for summer camp and took various scouting adventures here as a child.
Cynthia enjoys spending her time with her husband, daughter, and zoo of animals. Cynthia is a mixed media artist and likes to work with anything art related and messy. She is very active within her church where she teaches Sunday school and is the Drama team lead. She is also a Girl Scout Leader for her daughter's troop.
CHILDREN'S MINISTRY COORDINATOR
Laura joined our team as the After School Adventure Director in August of 2018, and became the Children's Ministry Coordinator in April of 2019. Laura's background is in education, with her first job out of college being an after school teacher at a reading program, followed by a series of teaching and special education positions at various schools in Connecticut. During her time at Fordham University, Laura was involved in Retreat Ministry, was on the board of the United Christian Fellowship, and sang in the Gospel Choir.
Laura spends nearly 24 hours a day with children and is happy doing so. Whether it is with our nearly 100 students at After School Adventure, at a Homeschool Hangout, another Rockfish program, or at home with her son Nehemiah, Laura is surrounded by children and wouldn't have it any other way. In her spare time, you can find Laura playing, doing crafts, and going on adventures with Nehemiah.
Program Ministry Facilitator
Joel has been a longtime member of the Rockfish Family. Beginning in 1999 Joel attended Camp Rockfish as a summer camper. Brought to Rockfish by his father, a Rockfish Staff member in the 1980's, this place runs in his blood. At age 16, Joel joined summer staff as a part of the junior staff program and then in 2008 became senior summer staff. After working at Camp for a few years, Joel took a year off but returned to camp in 2012 where he met his future wife, Jessie. From 2014 to 2016 Joel worked as the worship leader for Edonton UMC and for an environmental company Carolina Silvics. After feeling God's call to return to camp, Joel worked as leadership staff summer 2016. In July, he married the love of his life, Jessie, and in the fall became a part of the full time Rockfish Staff. Since 2016, Joel has worked in every area of Rockfish programming and loves to share in the joy of camp. He loves working with children year round through After School Adventure and Summer Camp as well as working with retreat groups!
Not only is Joel our full time Program Ministry Facilitator bus is also a part time minister to his congregation at Parkton UMC. When he is not working, Joel loves to spend time with his friends and family as well as play and travel with his band Driskill where he is a back up vocalist and drummer.
Debbie came to Rockfish September 2008 making an employment move under the guidance of her son “Jared”, Jacque, and her best friend “God”. She is married to her second best friend “Jerry”. They grew up and live in Lumberton with their two sons, Jared and Ryan. She graduated from Womick Selenia Business College with a secretarial degree. Her hobbies are tennis, gardening, reading, Bible Study, and Genealogy. Chestnut Street UMC has been an active part of her life since birth and a huge part of her Christian Genealogy Tree, which now Rockfish has become a new branch. She is looking forward to the New Day here at Rockfish as we witness daily for Christ and extend more branches in OUR Christian Genealogy Tree.
Katherine was born in Fayetteville, NC and grew up just around the corner in Hope Mills, NC. She started at Rockfish at 16 working as junior staff. She spent most of the first summer washing dishes. For the next six summers she worked as a camp counselor, tree staff, and worked on the leadership team. She is currently a senior at University of North Carolina at Pembroke majoring in Psychology. She hopes to obtain her masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
For fun she likes to be outside! She enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, and so much more. Sometimes I enjoy to just sit on the couch and binge watch my favorite Netflix shows. She recently got married to her best friend Matt! They are enjoying their freedom to travel before expanding their family. Rockfish has always been a second home to her and at Camp she always strives to help out as much as she can in many different areas for the well-being and growth of Camp.
FOOD SERVICE MANAGER
Sonya is in charge of coordinating the kitchen team and serving up some awesome hospitality. Sonya is a culinary school graduate from Seneca Valley in Maryland who has worked as a professional chef for over a decade. She brings so many different styles of cooking into the Rockfish kitchen and goes out of her way to leave a smile on the face of every guest.
When Sonya is not working at Rockfish, she enjoys spending time at home, working in her yard, and hanging out with her dog, a lovable Cane Corso.
Also, known as "Moose", Frank grew up in the Garden State (New Jersey) on a small farm and was active in 4-H & FFA. Moose married and moved to western North Carolina where he and his wife 4 children and built a small farm. Moose started out his career building homes; foundation to framing, drywall, and grading. After he built hundreds of homes in the Mooresville area, he moved into industrial maintenance and installation of new machines. With over 20 years experience in servicing, maintaining, inspecting, trouble shooting, repairing, refurbishing, & upgrading, this gave Moose an opportunity to travel the US and work with professionals from all over the world.
Moose and his wife have three grandchildren that they love to spoil, and he loves to travel and meet new people! He has been on several mission trips, including an international mission to Brazil. He has an extensive collection of stories that he can't wait to share with you! His love for youth ministries and experience of construction makes him right at home here at Rockfish!
Maintenance Assistant & High Ropes Coordinator
William has been a part of the Rockfish team since 2017. Will is the creative genius behind the Fort and also the main facilitator of our High Adventure program. Will can tell you more about knots, pulleys, and cargo nets than you'll ever need to know! He is also an important part of our maintenance team and works hard to keep things running at camp.
When Will is not at work he enjoys hitting the Rock Climbing gym, hanging out with his family, and playing board games with his friends.
